Yesterday, Chicago lyricist extraordinaire Mick Jenkins dropped off a surprise EP titled or more; the anxious, which features seven tracks of heat. And while there are plenty of jewels to be found, there's something undeniably gripping about the album's hazy introductory cut, "Happy Gilmore," which finds Mick gravitating to a drugged-out, almost Earl Sweatshirt-style of production from Origami Beats. Opening up with a pitched up excerpt from Vic Mensa's infamous anti-Akademiks tirade on Everyday Struggle, "Happy Gilmore" plods along like a walk through a misty night, while Mick delivers some of his trademark pointed lyricism.
"Happy Gilmore tactics, catch you slipping if he carve up the ice," raps Mick. "Princess cuts in my flows, this n***a in here lighting squares like he know Vanna White." He may be channeling the Adam Sandler classic, but there's nothing comedic about the matter-of-fact way in which Mick murders a track. It's crazy that he hasn't blown up yet. Be sure to support Mick Jenkins by streaming the EP, which can be found by hitting the link above.
Quotable Lyrics
Tryna spit my shit, you'd likely slit your throat
You bitch n***s ain't Piccolo
Ain't no comeback kid, eight fingers on thumbtack, kid
I'm just open-handed slapping n***s
Happy Gilmore tactics, catch you slipping if he carve up the ice
Princess cuts in my flows, this n***a in here lighting squares like he know Vanna White
