The rapper was born on 17 June 1987, in Compton, California to Kenny Duckworth (father) and Paula Oliver (mother). Kendrick was named by his mother to honour the singer and songwriter Eddie Kendricks. He completed McNair Elementary in Compton Unified School District and Centennial High School in Compton. Kendrick was very brilliant and so graduated as a straight-A student in 2005 from Centennial High School.
